Neukölln's open-door radio, house to Carnatic classical.
George Patrick, a Glasgow DJ living in Berlin, started Refuge in 2015 as a fundraiser while the city's emergency shelters were filling with people who had fled Syria. With Richard Akingbehin he kept it running for five years — parties in Berlin, Bristol and Glasgow that raised more than €50,000 for women's centres, refugee housing groups, homelessness agencies and a shelter for people leaving domestic violence — before turning the whole thing into a 24-hour station in January 2021.
The booking policy is the point: shows go to people who have never had one, and the grid ends up running bouyon and dembow into maqam and taarab, spiritual jazz, italo disco, Afrobeat and Nick Höppner's post-punk hour. Since October 2025 it has broadcast from a shopfront on Niemetzstraße with a café and a studio, and the workshops it runs cost nothing.
Started as a benefit, stayed one.
