Eeeven...
De naald wordt afgestoft…
Highlife, jungle, and deep house from an Accra studio.
Four people started Oroko in Accra in 2021 — Truseye, Kikelomo, Nico Adomako and Naëmi Ada, with roots running through Ghana, Nigeria, Germany and the UK — and set it up not-for-profit, with a stated job of reclaiming narratives from African and diasporic artistic communities rather than importing someone else's. It opened with seventy residents across fifteen countries and ten languages, more than half of them living in Ghana, and has kept adding to that roster in the years since.
The roster is filed by city and the list now runs past a hundred of them: Accra, Kumasi, Tema, Prampram, Kokrobite and Agbledomi at home, then Kingston, Detroit, Ramallah, Port Sudan and Tāmaki Makaurau. Shows like (R) Heard Radio hand the hour to a visiting guest, and workshops and co-productions with community projects run alongside the broadcast.
The continent, talking to itself.
