Jazz, salsa and blues, with the news in between.
Hugo Morales and Florence Hernández-Ramos built KUVO to give Denver's Hispanic community a station of its own, Morales pushing the idea and Hernández-Ramos doing the research, the grant applications and the equipment buying that got it licensed. It first broadcast on 29 August 1985 under Denver Educational Broadcasting. Jazz became the format, but the founding remit never left: news and public service for the city's minority communities still run through the schedule. In 2013 it merged into Rocky Mountain Public Media.
Seventeen locally produced programmes fill the week from the Koelbel studio on Arapahoe Street, each with its own host. Weekdays run The Morning Set, A Jazzy Thing and Midday Jazz into the evening Night Beat and Jazz Odyssey slots. The weekend opens the format out: Latin jazz and salsa, gospel on Sunday morning, an all-blues afternoon, Brazilian and Mexican hours, and an R&B jukebox.
Where Denver keeps its jazz.
