Dusting off the needle…
Sixties soul, new hip-hop, and everything between.
Pierre Boucard was still at secondary school in 1985 when he and a friend settled on a name for a station they had no frequency to put it on, and SUN spent the next decade in attics and borrowed rooms. Boucard formalised the association in 1996 with François Picard, Samuel Vallee and Ludovic Averty, won a six-month temporary slot that April, and took 93 MHz two years later on a permit capped at twelve hours a day. Full days came only in 2003, and studios in Cholet, Saint-Nazaire and Angers followed.
The catalogue stopped at the 1970s and 1980s until 2008, when it opened to everything from the 1960s on — soul, funk, chanson, électro, hip-hop, rock and film themes, often in rare versions or covers nobody remembers. Fifteen percent of each month's rotation is reserved for new names, and once a week the studio goes to a regional band with the cameras running.
The pirates who went legal.
