Dusting off the needle…
Jazz, rocksteady and whatever the next DJ brings.
KTUH signed on from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on 7 July 1969, the first non-commercial FM station in the islands, and it has been run by students ever since. Dozens of DJs hold the schedule between them, almost all of them undergraduates who walked into the office in Hemenway Hall and filled in a form. The licence forbids advertising, so the money comes from listeners and the university foundation, and the hours between live shows run on an automated mix that leans on jazz and local artists.
No two hours match. Classic Jazz runs three of them on a weekday afternoon; The Kitchen Sink traces jazz out into funk and whatever else connects; one show holds to Jamaican records cut between 1968 and 1985; Halo Halo takes its name from the Filipino dessert and its method from the translation, mix-mix; Kīpuka Leo broadcasts in Hawaiian; Monday Night Live brings guests in to play.
The islands' oldest experiment.
