Anti-nuclear pirate turned Freiburg's freeform institution.
Radio Verte Fessenheim started broadcasting in 1977 out of the campaign against the reactor going up across the Rhine, and spent the next decade on air illegally before a licence finally came in 1988. The old reflexes held: in early 2023 police searched the newsroom and two journalists' flats over a link, in an article, to the archive of a banned platform. The journalist was acquitted in 2024, and in November 2025 the Federal Constitutional Court ruled the flat search a breach of broadcasting freedom.
It runs from Adlerstraße in Freiburg on 102.3. Morgenradio opens the weekday; a weekend afternoon belongs to DJ Jon-Jon and African Roots, then two hours of Jazz Spezial; Permanent Waves digs through the UK independent charts of exactly forty years ago. Espaço Aberto goes out in Portuguese, DJ Funkmaster Flash mixes The Funky House, and there is a magazine in Esperanto.
Three borders, zero deference.
