Midwest emo, boom bap and techno from the prairie south.
CKXU started in 1972 as a public-address system playing records inside University Hall at the University of Lethbridge, signed on as a 25-watt AM station on 23 October 1978 under the call letters CKUL, added a cable FM signal in 1988, and after the CRTC approved an FM licence in 2003 it reached 88.3 FM on 8 April 2004 from a transmitter on the Students' Union building. It has since grown to 2,900 watts, and the CKXU Radio Society keeps it going with fund drives and a crew of volunteers.
The weekly grid is a patchwork of volunteer shows, with emo and punk, grunge, hip hop and boom bap, techno and house, weekday classical afternoons, ska, Celtic and Newfoundland music, French and Spanish programmes, a weekly human rights interview show and a few talk magazines, while about 24 hours a week go to a mix drawn from the station's own library.
Small city, very loud dial.
