Dusting off the needle…
Goutte d'Or underground, dialled up on Minitel.
Nicolas Zéphirin started it in 2018 in the Goutte d'Or, and about fifteen people keep it going now, round the clock, with a brief that reads as plainly as it sounds: play emerging and independent artists, carry alternative and experimental music, and put a bridge between the underground and everyone else. Anyone can send their own recordings in and hear them on the stream, which is a rare offer to mean literally. Close to half a million listeners have passed through since then.
What comes out of it is genuinely hard to predict: Nina Simone into Stereo Total, Midnight Star into a rapper from the Bronx, R. Stevie Moore covering the Shaggs, and an album of the day that lands on Kleeer's 1982 disco record as readily as anything newer. Podcasts, concert recordings and flyers for the night's gigs sit around the stream, and listeners talk to each other in a chat window while it runs.
Windows 98 never left here.
