Memphis-haunted phonk and trap with the bass up front.
BADRADIO started in New Zealand in late 2017 as a run of filmed sessions billed as live from NZ, with local DJs and MCs dropping in for numbered episodes that went up as videos. By 2019 Paul Grey had turned it into a round-the-clock stream with its own phone app. He still runs the whole thing alone, from choosing the rotation to writing back to every artist who gets in touch. There is no investor or parent company behind it, and the station runs without ads or record label deals of any kind.
Phonk sets the tone, mostly the Memphis-leaning kind with pitched-down vocals and tape hiss, and harder trap cuts break it up. Slower chill beats drift in every so often. Every record on rotation came straight from the producer who made it, so the station favours small names with deep catalogues over anything a label pushed. A few prolific producers have well over a hundred tracks each.
Made for night drives and loud subs.
