Radio Bern RaBe belongs to the thousand or so people who pay to be members of it, which is why there is nobody upstairs deciding what gets played, and why the charts and the major labels' recommendation lists go straight in the bin. It spent nearly three decades in a house at Randweg 21 in the Lorraine quarter before moving across town to Sulgenrain in 2025 to let the old place be renovated. The canton handed it a culture prize in 2011, and the city a social prize six years after that.

Around 200 volunteers keep more than 70 shows going in close to 20 languages: Jazz am Sunntig, Rhythm & Blues Juke Box, RaBass, Headbangers, HipHop ir Aareschloufe, and Radio loco-motivo, which is made by people with psychiatric experience and took two prizes in 2015. The RaBe-Info newsroom grew through a decade in which most Swiss editorial desks did the opposite.
