Die Nadel wird entstaubt…
Indie, jazz, and world, picked by hosts, not a chart.
Radio Helsinki started in 2001 and spent the years from 2005 to 2013 owned by Helsingin Sanomat, which then announced it was finished with it. What followed was two rescues rather than one. A crowdfunding round in June 2015 asked listeners for €150,000 against the debts and took €360,000 from more than 1,700 of them, who became shareholders in the process; then, in October 2016, the station was sold to Livelaboratorio, the company the Finnish Musicians' Union runs. It has belonged to musicians since.
Presenters pick their own records — Matti Nives of We Jazz among them — and the results do not repeat: brooding indie and eighties guitar pop in the same stretch as Thai molam, Japanese city pop and Helsinki's own selector crews digging through old records. Mitä täällä tapahtuu holds the long evening block, and Yömusiikkia carries the small hours through to breakfast.
The capital's record collection.
