Trip-hop, French rock, and Russian guitar bands.
Sergey Kotyrev runs Radio.Fish alone from Saint Petersburg and indexes the whole thing by hand: over 300 artists and more than 1,700 tracks, every one of them there because he put it there. The station takes no advertising of any kind — no breaks, no sponsored segments, no paid placements — and covers its servers and its licensing on PayPal donations instead. Artists who send him something that fits get played, and a few end up on the small label he releases under the station's own name.
The shelf leans European and guitar-shaped before it leans anywhere else: French rock and chanson from the nineties, Russian new wave and post-punk from home, wiry American college rock alongside them. Underneath runs a deep seam of trip-hop and downtempo from the late-nineties labels that defined it, and further out, gothic world music and Balkan brass.
Rare fish, deep water.
