Balearic, dub and ambient on a long Melbourne fade.
Skylab has been broadcasting out of Melbourne since 2018 and has since settled at High Note in Northcote. The reason it exists is stated plainly on its own about page: it hands slots to presenters who do not already have one somewhere else. The schedule reads accordingly, with residents fifty episodes deep sitting beside people on their first, and the station opens every page by acknowledging that it broadcasts from land that always was and always will be Aboriginal land. Its subscribers keep it on air.
The centre of gravity is horizontal rather than club: ambient, balearic and dub up front, IDM, trip hop and deep house behind them, and threads of soul, indie and post-punk running through. Imago's Faultlines and Zjoso's Tribqu are both long-running residencies, while Liquid Architecture takes a strand for experimental sound art. Local and touring artists have played live in the room as well.
Horizontal by design.
