Homemade Azorean radio from the middle of the Atlantic.
Rádio Vaivém belongs to Silêncio Sonoro, a non-profit that has been running cultural projects out of Ponta Delgada since 2011: the Marca Pistola label, which puts out Azorean artists and nobody else; Imprópria, a film showcase built around gender equality; the Yuzin listings agenda, which also appears as a zine; and FLOP, a festival of comics and fanzines. The radio sits among them, online only, with no FM or AM frequency anywhere in the islands, and it carries no advertising and no news.
Programmes come from whoever wants to make one, teenagers to pensioners, and every episode is kept, from local music shows to series made by pairs of friends. Between them the stream wanders through dub techno and bass-weight electronics, spiritual jazz and Chicago free jazz, krautrock, Italian library music and quiet songwriters, often inside the same hour.
Everyone here gets a microphone.
