Radio as the artwork, from a Valparaíso festival.
Radio Tsonami is the broadcast arm of Tsonami Arte Sonoro, the Valparaíso organisation that has run Chile's international sound art festival every November since 2007 and kept workshops, concerts and teaching going year-round since 2012. The station's own infrastructure was paid for in 2021 out of Germany's relief fund for cultural organisations, administered through the Goethe-Institut, which is roughly the scale of institution it takes to keep a sound art station on the air.
Ruido y Señal is the flagship: an afternoon of premieres, conversations and performance, built from field recordings and from the Tsonami sound art diploma, where each year's students present work on the wave nature of sound and radio. Viernes Espæciales carries pieces from festivals abroad, and the whole signal has handed itself over to relays of Glasgow's Radiophrenia festival.
Where the noise is the point.
