Dub, dubstep, breaks and free jazz out of Bucharest.
Black Rhino began in Bucharest as a project about music and the people around it, built by a team out of music and visual arts — a 2017 conference on music and communities, with guests from Outlook Festival and Samurai Music, came before there was a station to speak of. Broadcasting started in February 2018 on two strands: Social Sundays, which opened on a roots reggae vinyl set, and Black Rhino Mix Sessions, which opened on dubstep. It has never carried advertising, and it pays its royalties.
More than 150 shows run now, hosts curating with no genre brief: house and techno, dub and dubstep, jungle and breaks, with jazz, reggae and hip-hop threading through. Dub & Beyond with Ursu Dub goes back to the first year; Gems Diggers, Deranjazz and Mass Sewage fill out an ordinary week. A monthly residency trades slots with Radio alHara in Palestine.
Nothing here is on autopilot.
