Javanese gamelan and wayang, recorded live in the room.
Balai Budaya Minomartani is a village cultural hall north of Yogyakarta, built in 1990, in the late New Order years, by arts activists on land lent by a Catholic catechetical centre and paid for by the neighbourhood itself. They modelled it on the Balinese banjar — a hall anyone can use — and acquired a bronze Javanese gamelan in both pelog and slendro tunings. Karawitan groups formed around that one set of instruments, and the hall has been turning out Yogyakarta musicians ever since.
The radio began as one of the hall's activities and was revived in 2000 as Radio BBM FM, licensed on 107.9 and later moved to 107.7. It was among the community stations that pushed Indonesia's 2002 broadcasting law into existence and helped set up the Yogyakarta community radio network. What goes out is what happens in the hall: gending, wayang kulit, acoustic sets.
