Leipzig's free radio since 1995, in five languages.
The Radio-Verein Leipzig was founded in September 1990 as a straight answer to the GDR's missing freedom of expression: enthusiasts who wanted a frequency of their own and a programme made close to the people who would listen to it. Winning it took five years of argument over recognition, airtime, frequencies and money, and Radio Blau finally went out in 1995. It broadcasts from a courtyard on Paul-Gruner-Straße, on 99.2 MHz in the evenings and at weekends, on DAB+, and round the clock online.
666 FM works through the history of punk in five-year steps; Abstieg und Zerfall handles post-punk, new wave and garage punk; 45minutes has run indie-pop, twee, soul and Afrobeat since a presenter borrowed the name from an MTV show. Ostrock, heavy metal, hip-hop and techno each hold hours of their own, and nobody is held to ninety seconds or to German.
