Portland's basement shows, given an FM license.
XRAY.fm went on air from East Portland on 15 March 2014 at 91.1 FM, and has since added 107.1 in the city and 91.7 in Nehalem, out on the Oregon coast. It is a community station, licensed to a non-profit and paid for by its members, and the mission it states for itself is plain enough: hold a microphone up to the best and most distinctive of Portland, and build a centre for ideas, music and creativity in service of more open media and a more just community. Progressive talk shares the schedule with the music.
The music comes from more than eighty Portland DJs — promoters, label owners, working musicians and the city's most committed record obsessives — with shows running from indie to hip-hop, metal, soul and psych. The station is blunt about why it bothers: it will not use an algorithm to play you what you already like, because your phone can do that.
Loud, proud, and a little left.
