Graz's ex-pirate free radio, kraut to improv to attac.
Radio Helsinki broadcast illegally from 1992 until the summer of 1995, part of the push against Austria's state monopoly on radio, and that September became the first free radio in the country to go out legally. It runs as an association — Verein Freies Radio Steiermark — in which the editorial members elect the programme council once a year, and it is one of the Austrian free radios signed to a charter that rules out advertising. Ruxandra Petroșanu took over as managing director in May 2025.
92.6 carries a day that changes character every hour: Austrian Frequencies on the country's underground, YUbox working from the Vardar to the Triglav, a film hour, a sports talk, a nineties genre mix, an attac-aligned politics magazine, and the VON UNTEN desk, which reports from the street rather than the studio. The music desk fills the unhosted stretches.
Ears open, cotton buds crossed.
