Spolveriamo la puntina…
Mediterranean music and unapologetic Marseille politics.
Radio Provisoire went out over Marseille from 1979, pre-recorded onto cassettes and transmitted from whichever flat or car the police were not watching — the transmitter once travelled by moped. When the airwaves opened it took a room on boulevard des Dames with two turntables, two cassette decks, two microphones and a mixing desk a volunteer built by hand, which lasted a decade. Told to merge with Radio Gazelle, it refused, and joined Soleil Provence and Treize instead in October 1984.
The charter that came out of that merger commits the station to antiracist, antifascist, feminist, ecologist and anti-ableist positions, and a handful of paid staff work alongside about a hundred volunteers to keep it. Mouzika, Le Plateau du Sénégal and La cité métisse carry the music of the city's diasporas; Rock à la casbah, Metal Mania and Métaclassique take the rest.
Still rowing, still arguing.
