Punk, trad and afrobeat on the same weekly grid.
Galway's push for a student station began with a university Radio Society in 1993, timed by luck with Michael D. Higgins' spell as the minister responsible for broadcasting, who was busy championing community radio in its infancy. UCG and Galway RTC applied jointly, spent two years assembling the funding and the studios, and Flirt FM went out on 105.6 FM on 28 September 1995, one of eleven stations in the state's community radio pilot. The first choice of name, Vox, was already a magazine.
Programme policy fixes the ratio: sixty per cent music, a quarter of that Irish, and the talk split between current affairs and everything else. The head of music sifts a thousand-odd submissions a month, asks for nothing AI-generated, and would rather have wonky and lo-fi than polished. No.Future takes the punk, Bleeding Eardrums the metal, Reggae on the Radio the rest.
A new intake every autumn.
