Brighton speech and music, 97. 2 and not for profit.
It began in 2004 as a two-week trial broadcast during the Brighton Festival, and took three more years to win a full community licence, which arrived in 2007. Everyone who presents is a volunteer, and the station keeps no playlists at all — producers choose their own records. Seventy percent of the audience is in Brighton and Hove, with the rest spread out to Falmer, Worthing, Chichester and Littlehampton, and the podcasts have passed half a million downloads between them.
Speech and music split the week about evenly. Albion Roar takes the football and Brighton Book Club the reading, with hours for food, pets, film and politics alongside an HIV Hour and Refugee Radio. The music runs from Slipstreem's worldwide beats through Move On Up and SoulShyne on soul to Into The Haze and The Mental Moshpit. Bands pitch producers directly.
Funded by its own listeners.
