Jazz with a public mandate, from bebop to brand new.
ABC Jazz began life under a different name. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation launched it as Dig Jazz on 10 November 2004, one of a handful of digital-only stations built when digital radio in Australia was still a promise rather than a frequency, and renamed it once the idea had settled in. It has never had an FM signal at all: listeners find it on DAB+, on digital television, or through the ABC's app, which makes it a national jazz service that has to be sought out on purpose rather than stumbled into.
Programming splits between presented shows and curated hours. The long-running Jazztrack is Mal Stanley's; The Dinner Set, Jazz Legends, Essential Jazz and Jazz Unwind fill out the week, with James Valentine, Megan Burslem and Monica Trapaga among the other voices. The brief covers Australian players alongside international names, the settled canon alongside whoever arrived last year.
Taxpayer-funded good taste.
