Hooold...
Dusting off the needle…
Funk, soul and deep hip-hop, weekly since 1996.
Professor Groove and DJ Static have been making WEFUNK in Montreal since 1996, one weekly mix-show that goes out live on Friday nights and has never changed hands. The brief has not moved either: hip-hop's roots and its future set against the funk, soul and jazz it came out of, pulled from crates rather than from promos. The Friday broadcast goes over CKUT, Montreal's campus station, and the round-the-clock stream is thirteen hundred archived shows playing through in rotation.
One recent hour had Dr.J rebuilding New York radio in the spirit of Red Alert and Marley Marl — rare sides by International Rap Syndicate and Nasty Comedians, album cuts from The Most and Stezo, a lunchroom cypher with Top Choice Clique, a mothership flyby from Temu, and Lagos grooves from Tirogo and Soki Ohale. The reach across all of that is the show.
Two diggers, still no filler.
