Britpop, new wave and indie rock across four decades.
Indie 103.1 went on the air in Los Angeles just before midnight on Christmas 2003, a commercial alternative station whose launch team included program director Michael Steele, music director Mark Sovel and DJ Todd "TK" Killiam. It lasted five years before advertising dried up in the downturn and owner Entravision switched the frequency to a Spanish-language format in January 2009. Killiam later started The Independent FM online with Paul V, a mash-up DJ from the old station, to carry on its sound.
Nobody presents it now. The stream runs around the clock from Los Angeles on Britpop, indie rock and new wave, sold as indie past, present and future, and an hour can run from eighties synth-pop and Madchester through nineties slacker rock and the early-2000s New York revival to current post-punk and songwriters, so it rarely stays in one decade for long.
For anyone who misses the old dial.
