Radio art and jungle from a corner of South Devon.
Two Dartington College of Arts graduates, Nell Harrison and Lucinda Guy, started Soundart Radio in 2006 as a student station. Ofcom backed it for community radio the next year, and from February 2009 it went full time on 102.5 FM from a transmitter at Dartington Hall, covering about five kilometres round Totnes and often reaching as far as Paignton or up onto Dartmoor. It sits in the Radia network of arts stations, membership is open to anyone, and it calls itself a place to listen, play and experiment.
Most weeks lean toward sound art and the far edges of music. Framework, the field-recording programme that started on London's Resonance FM in 2002, has a weekly slot, and The Oima Show, which is older than the station itself, brings noise and drone. Around them volunteers run everything from drum and bass to prog rock and dub, and Democracy Now! goes out twice a day.
Weird on purpose, local by licence.
