Ninety volunteer teams sharing one Frankfurt frequency.
radio x has been Frankfurt's non-commercial city station since 1997, on 91.8 FM and carrying no advertising at all. Around ninety editorial teams share the frequency — students, migrants' collectives, record diggers, scientists — each with its own slot and its own subject, which is why the schedule reads less like a format than like a list of everyone in the city who wanted an hour of their own. The office keeps ordinary hours on Kurfürstenstraße; everything else is volunteers.
A-Mez has broadcast in Turkish, Kurdish, Sorani and German since 1997. African Presence is made with the African studies institute in Mainz, Chopstick musicbox pairs Chinese records with recipes, and Collectionism goes through what the music industry threw away. Der Himmel geht weiter takes rock and pop history past the charts, and on Das Seminar a man sits alone in the studio for an hour with no notes and no music.
No ads, no format, no filler.
