Dusting off the needle…
Indie, alt-pop and nu disco from the Guatemalan dial.
Radio Infinita broadcasts on 100.1 FM from Guatemala City, run by a company called Radio Inteligente that built it on a single premise: an eclectic format whose job is to put Guatemalan listeners in the same room as whatever is happening everywhere else. Its standing invitation — que lo distinto te encuentre, let the different find you — is the entire editorial policy in five words. The station has been on air since at least 2014, and it divides its hours between music and talk rather than choosing one.
An hour on air moves from widescreen American indie rock to Swedish electro-soul and soft-focus British R&B, then out to French nu-disco and a glossy retro-funk single, before turning back toward the region for Argentine, Mexican and Guatemalan indie bands. Guatemalan chart radio this is not, and the distance from it is plainly deliberate rather than incidental.
Proof the mainstream is optional.
