Canillejas' free radio, chewing away since 1988.
Radio Carcoma was born in mid-1988 as the voice of Canillejas, out on Madrid's north-eastern edge, and went on air on 14 April with a 150-watt transmitter borrowed from Radio Mercurio and about twenty-five people, seven till midnight every night of the week. A year later it was the last free radio in Madrid shut down by the telecoms directorate. In 1992 the district councillor reported it over a remark about the King at the AVE inauguration, and the case was dropped once every free radio in the country made noise.
It has since moved online, running around the clock, each member-made show repeated three times across the week: AORLand for album rock, Siglo XX Radio and Blanco y Negro for the record hours, Malos Tiempos para la Rebeldía and Cinema Paradiso for the talk, and a musical thread filling the gaps between them. From 1995 the same people were also putting out a music fanzine, El Agujero.
Still annoying the right people.
