Die Nadel wird entstaubt…
Balinese indie rock, alternative and punk, non-stop.
Volcano came out of a not-for-profit set up in the hills of Bali by an Australian radio archivist, Mark Fahey, who had arrived in 2018 to record the shortwave bands and stayed to build studios instead. It went on air alongside two sister stations at midnight on 1 January 2020, under one rule that has never moved: everything it plays is by a band from Bali, with no commercials or station promos between them. Demos are solicited openly, and the mailbag feeds a good part of the rotation.
The range runs from post-punk and dark surf out of Denpasar to skater pop-punk pulled out of that mailbag, with bands turning up from towns that had never been on air before. New albums go into rotation track by track, presenter shows pick out favourites, and everything is licensed through the Indonesian Music Licence Centre so the bands actually get paid.
If they're from Bali, they're on.
