New soul and R&B, from London to the retro revival.
Pinguin Radio went online in 2011 to keep the alternative sound of the departed Kink FM on air, and over the following years the foundation behind it added sister streams for particular audiences and listening moments. Groove is the one it set aside for soul and R&B, with Blues and World running alongside it for the neighbouring traditions. Each is put together by someone who knows the genre well, and Groove runs around the clock with no presenters and no ad breaks, kept going like the rest of Pinguin by donations and sponsorship.
Most of what plays is soul from the last decade or so, the London neo-soul scene and the American retro-soul revival with its horn sections and grit, next to alternative and contemporary R&B. The older records come through in smaller doses, a gospel-rooted voice here and a seventies funk band there, and a few jazz-leaning singers drift in between the newer names.
Slow-burning, never sleepy.
