Free jazz to street punk, most of it brand new.
KFJC went on the air at eight in the evening on 20 October 1959, out of a broom closet at the old Foothill Junior College campus in Mountain View, running four hours a week of study music and educational tape. It moved to the new Los Altos Hills campus and to 89.7 in 1961. The turn came on 4 October 1978, when five student managers voted their general manager out for pushing commercial-radio formatting; the mutineers took the station and, in the words of its own timeline, raised the banner of punk.
At least 35 per cent of every show, counted by track, has to come from records added in the last eight weeks, which is why the library runs from free jazz and blues through street punk and Turkish reissues. Volunteers put in eight hours a week and elect their own managers. In 1983 the station played 823 versions of Louie Louie across 63 hours and made the Wall Street Journal.
The mutiny never ended.
