Sixties ska and rocksteady, horns and harmonies.
Pinguin Radio went online in 2011 to carry on the alternative sound Kink FM had left behind, and the foundation behind it has since added sister streams for particular moods and audiences. Fiesta is the sunniest of them, and despite the name it is no Latin party but a trip back to Kingston in the sixties. It keeps to a tight selection of a couple of hundred records, so favourites come round more than once a day, and like every Pinguin stream it runs without presenters or ad breaks, kept going by donations.
Ska and rocksteady carry nearly all of it, the vocal groups and harmony trios of the mid-sixties next to the horn-led instrumentals of the session bands, with a handful of early roots reggae, dub and deejay records from the following decade. The odd calypso or mento side slips in from earlier still, and a few of the singers turn up so often they start to feel like residents.
Small crate, no bad records.
