Detroit public radio: jazz, soul and local records.
WDET went on air in 1948, founded by the United Auto Workers, and has been licensed to Wayne State University since 1952 — a union station that became a university one without losing the city it was built for. It broadcasts at 101.9 from studios in Midtown Detroit, reaching across southeast Michigan, into northwest Ohio and over the water into Ontario, and it is the region's NPR flagship, so Morning Edition and All Things Considered share the day with sixty hours a week of locally made programming.
The music half is where the presenters show their hands. Ed Love holds Destination Jazz, Ann Delisi's Essential Music and Rob Reinhart's run on taste rather than format, Ryan Patrick Hooper turns up new records daily In the Groove, and Don Was keeps a Motor City Playlist. MI Local gives the hour to Michigan artists, and The Progressive Underground digs into electronica and rare grooves.
