Contemporary European jazz, digital from the start.
The Czech Radio Council approved a jazz station in August 2010, and it arrived in stages: an internet-only stream called EuroJazz from 2011, then a full station under the name Český rozhlas Jazz on 1 March 2013, and by that June a slot of its own in the digital terrestrial multiplex, which until then it had shared with ČRo Plus. It has stayed off FM ever since — internet, DAB, satellite and cable only — and the licence fee covers the whole thing, so nothing at all is sold between the records.
Programming leans on contemporary European and Czech playing rather than the American canon, though the range runs from the music's beginnings to current fusions. The editors name an Album of the Week and air it twice a day, Jazz Club carries club and festival concerts every week, and once a month Den s… hands eight straight hours to a single musician.
The canon is not the point.
