Salzburg's ex-pirate free radio, 200 shows in ten tongues.
Bongo 500 went out once a week from one of the mountains above Salzburg from 23 November 1992, advertised on a matchbox, and the courts answered the pirates with helicopters before seizing the transmitter in the summer of 1993. The Austrian broadcasting monopoly fell in 1996, but what the association won was not a frequency: it was a five-hour Wednesday window on a commercial station. The official start came on 7 October 1998, from a container parked in front of the ARGEkultur.
107.5 followed from the Plainberg in 2002 — half of it, shared with an advertising firm, until that firm went bankrupt in 2004 and left them the whole thing. More than 350 producers fill some two hundred programmes and some eight and a half hours of new material a day: The Rocking 50s takes hillbilly and rockabilly, Radio Hamraz runs in Farsi, PakIndia Express brings the Pakistani-Indian hour.
Outran the helicopters.
