Echobox describes itself as antenna anarchy from below sea level, which is both a joke about Amsterdam and a fair account of the programming. Five people — Rachella Groen, Chalice Cox-Hynd, Mohamed Ghabri, Lorenzo Milelli and Victor Crezee — put it together during the shut-down year of 2020 and got it on air in 2021, and by 2022 it had won the Amsterdamprijs voor de Kunst for work of the year. In November 2025 it moved into a studio inside the Oedipus brewery in Amsterdam-Noord.
More than 150 radio makers pass through the schedule, and new residencies are handed out on the strength of a pitched idea rather than a following: presenters, local selectors and breakfast-show hosts are invited to apply. There is no video anywhere in it, by choice — the station is audio only, and says what it thinks about everything else in a house policy.
