Quitando el polvo a la aguja…
Student radio since 1968, specialist hours after dark.
It started as Network 4, a group of students putting black-and-white programmes round a closed circuit of the University of Leeds in the 1960s. The union built them a proper studio and control room on the top floor in 1968, so they could make things for BBC Radio Leeds — concerts, debates, dramas and a half-hour news programme called University City. The setup has outlasted all of that: an elected committee of student volunteers does the running, with one full-time manager on the union payroll.
The music week is divided by domain rather than by taste, one core show each for jazz, funk and soul, rock and punk, afrobeats, folk and country, indie and alternative, hip hop and R&B, and electronic, with Live and Local for bands from the city. Afternoons go to strands like Earth On Air and But Where Are You Really From?, and the DJs also work union and city venues.
Best in the country, twice.
