The whole city's record collection, hour by hour.
Luis Castillo and Denis Makhlin started Hyde in 2019 out of a dorm room at the Academy of Art, Makhlin's mother's house in Ingleside and a shared flat in Daly City, modelling it on the college stations and radio collectives they admired in Los Angeles. When the clubs shut in 2020 and DJs went looking for somewhere to play, volunteers arrived faster than the two of them could place them, and the station took a room upstairs in the old California Savings Bank at 16th and Mission.
Dozens of residents share the week, and the grid runs high-BPM techno into Korean traditional, dancehall into krautrock, yacht rock into dubstep, with nothing in between to smooth the join. Every show goes out live from the studio and gets recorded, which has turned the archive into the fullest running catalogue of what the city is actually playing in any given week.
No audition, just a time slot.
