Classical at dawn, industrial at 3am, all student-run.
WREK signed on from Georgia Tech on 25 March 1968 and has been student-run ever since — managed, operated and engineered by undergraduates, with the licence held by the institute's Radio Communications Board and most of the bills paid by student government. The engineering shows up in the signal: 100,000 watts covering metropolitan Atlanta, where a campus station of this kind typically runs somewhere between a hundred and fifteen hundred. Everything broadcast is archived for two weeks.
Around fifty hours a week are specialty shows built in-house; the rest run as formats whose names tell you the hour. The Classics takes the early morning, Just Jazz the late one, Blue Plate Special the early afternoon and Rock, Rhythm & Roll the rest of it. Atmospherics handles the small hours, and Overnight Alternatives takes whatever is left standing.
Engineers, at full power.
